  1. Chairman’s report

We have just lost a long standing member of the Sharpie class during these championships. Geoffrey Kemp passed away yesterday. The condolences of the Association go to Bruce who is continuing to compete and to all of Geoffrey’s family.

Mike had received a letter from Corrine Blackall telling him of Jasper’s death at the age of 97 in April this year. Jasper was the helm, and bronze medallist, of Chuckles in the 1956 Olympics).

Martin undertook to enquire as to the health of our President, Dudley.

There has been a good turn out for the 2 open meetings earlier this year with 7 boats attended Overy and 10 at Wells. There has been a mix from BSSC and the Overy stalwarts and this has resulted in some interesting results. There are hopes the enthusiasm can be maintained through the Europeans next year.

Martin expressed his thanks to Chris for keeping the communications going so well.

  1. Treasurer’s Report

The only income to the Association is from subs but this varies year on year with a noticeable surge when Pam Farrell is involved in some dubious bullying at championship entries.  Well done Pam!

Chris explained the reasoning behind the loans which had been used to cover unexpected expenditure at the last UK held Europeans and the final repayment of these.

The building society account has been closed as it gave little interest and the money used to repay loans. Efforts are being made to sell the Santander shares to boost funds that will be needed for next years European championships at Itchenor, the costs of which have yet to be ascertained.

Mike Farrell proposed acceptance of the accounts, seconded Martin Read.

  1. Technical report

Nothing to report.

Rob Wynne suggested that the scales should be checked as some of the results of recent weighings were a little unexpected and open to question. Jim Crossman suggested that we look into purchasing some new digital load cell scales which would give more accurate readings.

  1. Europeans 2018/19

There are 4, possibly 5, British boats going to Hamburg. This is quite low as the venue is not attractive.

Itchenor is the destination for next year! Dates will be 18th-23rdAugust 2019. James Nunn has taken the lead on organising the event and already started his research. It would be good if the fleet captains and all BSOA members would encourage attendance. It is hoped that the new venue (away from Brancaster) will attract more overseas visitors but we still need a good core of British boats to make the costs viable.

A number of people volunteered to help with the organisation including Chris Gibbs, Martin Read, Michael Farrell, James Case, James Nye and Henry Burkitt. James Nunn will co-ordinate and contact these people as required. One area to consider was whether we should take any safety boats of our own to help keep costs down.

There appears to be a growing enthusiasm at BSSC for sharpie sailing and it is hoped that this will continue into 2019.

  1. British Championship 2019

It was proposed by Sally Wynne that we visit Wells SC again in 2019. Seconded by Henry Burkitt.

  1. Open Meetings

Good attendance this year although Martin felt he had been looking at the stern of Capella rather to often.

   10. AOB

Chris asked about the favoured means of communication which seems to be email although the website is now very informative and much information also appears on Facebook.

Rob Wynne reported a sharpie for sale for £250 on ebay. Suspect it may need attention! [Subsequent note: it was GBR72 Medea and was bought by a sailor from the South coast and entered into the Bosham Classic Revival].

Jim Crossman suggested increasing the subs which have been the same for at least 10 years. James Case proposed increasing them to £20 for full members and £10 for associates which was accepted by the meeting and will apply from 1stJanuary 2019.

There being no other business, the meeting closed at 12.20.
